Caroline Adelaide Shaw’s Partita for 8 Voices just won a Pulitzer Prize. She uses a variety of modern and international vocal techniques in a way that feels native to the piece, not pretentious or forced, as is so often the case w/ modern, academically-bred music.
Above is an excerpt from the fourth and final movement. I’m not thebiggest fan of rhythmic spoken word stuff, so that’s probably my least favorite part. But otherwise they make some crazy sounds together that I don’t think I’ve ever heard before, at least not all at once.
You can listen to Partita in full on her website, performed by Roomful of Teeth, of which she is a member. The Sarabande movement is my favorite.
