Rafters and supporting beams in halls at Oxford that dated back to 1096 rotted and needed replacing. But the type of extra-rigid oak used during original construction is now endangered, which made repairing the beams  to the original specs prohibitively expensive.

That is, until a professor discovered a deed to a plot of land far from campus that turned out to be a small forest, planted by Oxford caretakers from long ago, that contained, naturally, oak trees of the same variety needed to repair the halls.

Long-term thinking FTW.
